Hag stones—also known as adder stones, witch stones, or holey stones—are rocks with naturally occurring holes, usually formed by water.
While predominantly known in British, Celtic, and European folklore as protective talismans, hag stones are also believed to have been recognized in ancient Egypt
The theory goes that only good things can pass through a hole, this belief may be bolstered by the centuries old belief that magic cannot work on moving water. So, since the hole in a hag stone was created by moving water, it works as a protective shield.
For me the hag stone also honours the Cailleach (pronounced KAL-yuhk or CAL-yak) the goddess of winter, the divine hag, associated with the creation of the landscape, winter and storms.
My Hag stones are all found by me while beach coming, and beautifully cast in recycled silver.
At 19 grams, this pendant has a lovely feeling of weight.
Hung by a chunky silver loop, and on a waxed cotton cord as option 1, standard.
